    5. As a performer, I wonder if a lot of performers get nervous as well.

I noticed that the writer expands what he is describing by stating the obvious. For example, the writer wrote “those who walk this great down” and describes the number of women, children.
It is highly obvious that you would encounter that.

  2. Exercise 1:
    Hyperbole:
    1. My school’s so full, we look like a pack of sardines in the ocean.

    Exercise 2:
    – To advance his point, Swift uses understatement by making points that usually the reader would put together in their minds, in his writing. Thoughts like not thinking about something to be true, stating facts, and re-stating what he already stated, are all interpreted with the use of understatement. In my opinion, the understatement used isn’t really effective as understatements. I feel like they are more effective as facts, or the author’s thoughts because they aren’t demonstrating something’s true power.

    Exercise 2:
To explain his thoughts, Swift starts off with something obvious that the reader can point out and also see for himself. He talks about the condition of the town with understatements to explain how this is obvious. From what the reader can read, they understand that this isn’t what the town is experiencing and it is much worst.

    Exercise 2:
    – Swift uses understatement to describe the living conditions of many that live in said town. He states things like “crowded with beggars of the female sex” and “they can very seldom pick up a livelihood by stealing till they arrive at six years old”, showing that these residents have a very hard life. I don’t believe that his use of understatement here is very effective because he is describing a harsh reality for these people and how they survive. I normally find the use of understatement to be funny, however Swift’s Use doesn’t strike me as funny but as factual and serious.

    Exercise 2:
Jonathan Swift uses understatement to describe how the town is like living conditions. I feel like even though he had a pretty good use of understatement it was not necessary because right after he used it he went on explaining like he had to choose between the 2 either understatement sentences or the explanations he was giving.

His use of understatement is in the words- just, calculate, subtract, and only. Only, belittling the large amounts stated; subtract, making it seem like less and less people are affected by a certain thing (poverty); calculate, adding a certain cold indifference as if they are just numbers; and just, also belittling large emotionally impacting subjects like a beggar with kids. His understatement is effective in the idea that it would cause readers to feel pity for these people more and want to help them because the writer seems dismissive to that idea of helping them.

Swift technically applied the concept of an understatement to communicate a grievously absurd circumstance on a note. Most of the things he wrote in the passage could have been represented as it were, but a touch of rhetorical subtleness was applied to pass the message without an unnecessary lucidity. One of the instances, where understatements were used, is; “although I apprehend there cannot be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom”. The statement presents a modest assessment of an estimated population of people who could maintain their family responsibility. He used a little pessimism or doubt to suggest that the estimate of that population could be less. This style was replicated in many other instances of the passage.
