Discussion: Practicing Claims

Due 11/14

Today we will practice making claims. Even though this inquiry paper is not an “argumentative” essay intended to persuade, you still need to make claims based on 1) what you learn in your research and 2) the relationships between these ideas.

So, today we’ll practice using something that is hopefully easier and more fun: animated movies.

FIRST, read Chapter 8 of The Craft of Research, PDF is here. This explains some best practices for writing strong and specific claims.

SECOND, complete this Disney/Pixar movie bracket. For each pair, choose whichever movie you think is the best movie (not which one you like more). Work your way through the pairings until you have a winner. If you haven’t seen some of the movies, that’s okay — probably most people haven’t seen all of them. You can either just pick the ones you have seen, or pick which ones seem best based on your knowledge of them. Remember: BEST, not FAVORITE. There are a couple places on the bracket where it says “play-in winner.” This is because the bracket is originally from an internet contest where people voted on what would take these slots. Here, either ignore and advance the other movie, or you can choose one of your own favorites that isn’t on the bracket.

THIRD, once you have your winner, practice writing a strong claim about why this movie is the best of all of the other movies. Remember to use the best practices you learned from reading Chapter 8 of The Craft of Research. Post your claim as a comment on this post.

FOURTH, look at the other comments to read others’ claims. Either offer suggestions for how to strengthen the claims or write counter claims in response to those you disagree with. Why is your movie better than this specific movie?

  1. The winner that is the best of all the other movies is Toy Story. Toy Story is the best one because the movie came out in 1995, more than 20 years ago, and to this day, people all over the world enjoy this movie and appreciate the movie that brought the franchise. The fact is that people still enjoy this movie to this day considering that funny memes are being made in 2o22 to show appreciation for the movie and the franchise as well as giving credit to the iconic voice actors that played their respective roles in the movie.

  2. My Claim: The best animated Disney movie is the Lion King because it’s a classic film, it depicts love and loss in a beautiful way, and has a great soundtrack. When people think of “The best Disney movie”, they automatically think of the Lion King because of how memorable it is as a classic film in history.

  3. The best Disney/Pixar movie would have to be The Lion King. The Lion King is one of the most known children movies because of how good it is, the plot, the characters, the lessons, everything. It also has one of the most memorable scenes which is Mufasa’s deathe scene. It is also good to keep in mind that this movie caters to all ages and no matter how old you get you will still enjoy the movie just like you remember when you were younger.

    1. I agree with everything you said. I felt that everything was done well from the music to the themes. It was a movie that we have all seen as a kid and the theme still stays with us about the greedness from Scar and Simba getting over the sorrow of his father and accepting the role as the nice Lion King. Sometimes movies have pointless scenes but, I thought every scene had meaning and setting the tone in Africa was done well.

  4. The title of the greatest animated Disney movie goes to Toy Story. This movie is so iconic and stands as one of the strong foundations Disney made. Toy Story is so popular that if you were to ask any random person to finish the quote “To infinity…” they will automatically know that “and beyond!” is the correct answer. The iconic character Buzz Lightyear even recently got their own movie, years after Toy Story was released.

    1. I agree with your claim because the entire Toy Story franchise, in general, impacted so many people’s childhoods as well and as they grow up they reflect on this movie and how iconic the franchise is as well how positively it impacted them.

    2. Toy Story is a very influential movie, it was the first entire computer-animated feature film and the first feature film for Pixar. However something I think that holds it back is the graphical limitations at the time the film was being developed. While the graphics of the animation do not look bad by any means, they are certainly outclassed visually by Pixar’s later work. Also something I think that you could mention to strengthen your claim is to talk about the franchise Toy Story started, with 3 sequels, a spin-off, and tons of merchandise.

  5. The best animated Disney movie is Coco. Coco is the best movie because it shows the Mexican culture which was rarely because Disney’s movies don’t do that often with Hispanics. Also it has this mixed emotions of persuading the viewer in this case to stick their feelings to the movie, and it makes you cry and laugh at the same time. It also makes people such as little kids like the one in the movie to identify with Coco’s personality and make them also appreciate their culture more.

  6. Up is the greatest Disney movie because of its characters. There is Mr. Frederickson who is a grouch but likable and is ultimately redeemed when he chooses to prioritize his friends than his old house that was important to him because of the memories he made with his wife in it. Russell is a rambunctious boy who while annoying, is a pure-hearted individual who is kind. The core of the movie is fixed on the relationship between Mr. Frederickson and Russell. The villain is interesting because he happens to be Mr. Frederickson’s childhood hero and his character is exactly what Frederickson eventually lets go of at the end of the movie. Supporting characters such as Kevin and Dug add moments of hilarity and serve as comic relief. Finally, Ellie, who only has a few lines of dialogue affects the protagonist, Mr. Frederickson deeply, by loving him in her life and encouraging him even after her death.

  7. My winner is “Cars” and that’s my favorite childhood cartoon.
I think this movie had a lot of impact for my future. To be honest that made my character in some kinda way. That teaches me to be really patient and if you’re really good in something or even the best from your surroundings don’t brag. “If you fly high you fall hard”, that’s not the quote from this movie but that’s my personal reflection after watching beginning of this movie, when Lightning Mcqueen (main character) thought that he won and started to celebrate but after refers check it was a draw. It also teaches me to work hard as it’s possible, work as you want to be the best and never give up. Lighting teached a lot of things and one of the most important is to do not boast about what I do, because I know that there can always be someone who does more, and at the same time I want to be the one who do the most”. I’m writing about my personal experiences and I think these things are really important in life. For children, teenagers or even adults.

  8. The best movie to come from Disney objectively has to be Tarzan. This movie has feeling in every scene and never falls to a dull or boring moment. The story is relatable in not knowing who you are and finding where you fit in. This movie is filled with love, pain, and joy making it one of the most authentic and at the same time making it a movie for all to enjoy. This movie also easily can be a contender for best soundtrack. Tarzan is rare in its own that got 3 movies and that also has to show for something. It’s popularity it’s impact and charaters. This movie has become underrated and is just wrong because it is undoubtedly one of the greatest movie ever.

  9. The best movie in all these options is Lion King because story that being told and universal message. For example, the movie is an emotional and moving movie. The animation was brilliant and it has great visuals everything in the movie looks great as if you’re actually in Africa with all of the realistic looking animals, the skyline and the grass, the trees, the rock that the lions stand on etc. In addition to the great music , the music also reflects the theme of the movie with its emphasis on African music, the big orchestral score, the choir etc. As well as the story that was told in perspective of Simba the young lion cub being next in line to be king, has a jealous uncle who kills his father in a stampede and the young cub is removed from his home and growed up with a meerkat and a warthog and tried to put the past behind him. But Rafiki had him confront his dead father in the form of a ghost and that finally gives him the motivation to come home and defeat his uncle Scar to take his place as the king. This theme of selfisheness and having to confront problem is a universal problem from such a small movie.

  10. The best movie in the Disney franchise is Lilo and Stitch. Lilo and Stitch is the best movie because not only is it a very enjoyable movie for kids and even grown adults to enjoy and it’s comedic moments throughout the entire film, but because of it’s heart warming message about family. The movie in itself has a bunch of fans who absolutely love Stitch and how crazy he can act. But also his adorableness attracts the audiences attention as well.

  11. The best movie and The winner is “Toy story” it is the flagship of Pixar. It came first. The first Pixar movie released was Toy Story in 1995, And it still shows new episodes, and new stories, which is also encouraging kids in some how to be adventurous, exciting, entertaining, and it’s good for the whole family, it’s got great characters, story, and plot, and above all, it’s fun.

  12. My Claim!
In my opinion the Incredibles is one the of the best! which It has memorable, compelling heroes, breaks down the superhero genre while adding its own style and flavor, brilliantly composed music by Michael Giacchino, a ‘incredible’ antagonist, incorporates traditional Pixar adult humour, general visually impressive action, and competently executed comedic moments.
Toy Story may have a competition and its the Incredibles!

  13. The winner for me has to be toy story not only because a character has the same name as me but because the storyline is so good and growing up watching we didn’t realize we would all relate to it. I remember watching it with my parents as well and they loved the movie. Toy Story is a top tier movie and good franchise it will never get old no matter how many times you play it and each plot and storyline plays out so well. Every halloween you see some little kid dressed up as one of the characters which just goes to show how good of a movie it is since it has impacted many generations. My nephew who is two years old knows and loves the movie.
